Helicopter over Ularu

All though we chose not to walk on the rock itself, we thought it was a great idea to fly over it. The helicopter would not start at first which is always a worrying thought.

We made it in the end.

The girls were very excited to sit inside and put on the headsets. Although Mia only had standard ear muffs.

Ularu seemed like miles away from the helipad but only took a few minutes and we were nearing the worlds largest rock.

Ayers Rock - Amazing Sunset

If you go to the centre of Australia it is guaranteed that you will watch the sunset at Ayres Rock. It will not disappoint you in any way. Every car will park at the designated parking area for the best view and then it's just a waiting game.

This 30-minute video is sped up to 1 minute to show the dramatic change of light that happens at sunset. In the last few moments, you really are freaked out by what the Rock does.

THE RED CENTRE
After 7 weeks we pull into the very very red centre of Australia. This video below is one of my all-time favourites.

We weren't to know but this photo of the girls collecting some red sand was later printed at 1.5 meters, framed and still hangs on our upstairs wall.

The Olgas

 The Olgas & Uluru Sunrise

Today we ventured out very early to watch the sunrise at the rock. Certainly not as captivating as the sunset but nice to see never the less.

After an hours walk with other campers around the base area, we decided to move to the next oversized outcrop nearest to us. 

Now we can see the Olgas just up ahead.

Kings Canyon NT

Camping just near the entry roadway to Kings Canyon we met a man who delighted in entertaining the girls with some campfire magic.

This was a place that everyone said"you have to go". The problem for us was 2 small children that couldn't cope with walks further than an hour or 2 at most. So we decided to do the creek walk instead.

This shorter and easier walk travels 2.6km (return) up along Kings Creek and leads you into the floor of the Canyon where you too can be rewarded with spectacular views.

The upper rim walk is uphill and about 4.5 - 5 hours to complete. 

Our chosen walk takes less than an hour to complete.

Here you can find a spot to sit or relax along the way and observe the bird life.

The Park Service has spent a lot of money on making this walk as easy as possible and for the first few hundred metres even wheelchair bound visitors can make this section with some assistance.

At the end of the Creek Walk is a raised platform with signage that tells you about this amazing place. Take a few minutes to just sit and relax and take in your surroundings.

On a hot day the Canyon floor is the place to be with tall trees and plenty of shade. This sheltered environment will help make wildlife spotting easier too.
